Rhiannon welcomes author Rebecca Royce…

Today I’m switching gears and handing my blog over to author Rebecca Royce.  Please enjoy the guest post and leave all kinds of comments below because Rebecca has graciously offered to give away a FREE ebook to a random reader.  When Rebecca has chosen a winner, I’ll make the announcement in a separate post. ~Rhiannon.

Which disasters scare you?

In my new book, Love In One Night, my heroine handles her anxiety by preparing for

scenarios, by knowing what she’d do if something happened.

When I was younger, I saw the movie Twister. I saw it on a date but that is neither

here nor there. It scared me. Yes, I’ve seen it since then and it didn’t scare me but

it really set me off for a while. We didn’t have tornadoes in New Jersey. Not very

frequently, anyway. I used to sit up at night and worry about twisters that were

not going to come. Now, maybe I did this because I couldn’t deal with the idea that

someone might set off a bomb in NYC, which was fifteen minutes from my house.

Snow storms, which we had a lot of, don’t frighten me at all. Yet, others tell me they

are worried about blizzards, that the idea scares them. More recently, we’ve moved

to Texas and fire has been the entity we need to be more concerned with.

What scares you? What disaster worries you?

Love-In-One-Night-mockupMelanie is a woman who prepares for disasters.  If the world as she knows it were to come grinding to a disastrous halt, her Sustainable Living Community will be ready and able to take care of the people in their area. She doesn’t have a man in her life anymore but she has her daughter and that’s enough.

Until a tall, dark stranger drives into her life.

Griffith is on a mission to find Melanie’s ex-husband Victor, who has stolen a very expensive new drug from a pharmaceutical company.  Griffith is a man who can find what others can’t.  He never backs down from a fight and he’s never afraid until he sees Melanie.  She steals his breath and makes him wish for things he’s never wanted before.

They are two people who can prepare for everything except the depths of their own need for each other.

“I married him because I got pregnant.” She put her hands on her hips. “And I won’t take his money because I won’t take money from the pharmaceutical companies. No offense.”

“Gee, why would I take offense when you meant to insult me?” Melanie’s face turned a lovely shade of cherry as he spoke.

“Truth is, I meant to say something nasty about Victor. I forgot, momentarily, what you do and who you do it for.”

He shrugged like he words hadn’t stung a bit. The pharmaceutical companies did both good and bad things. Griffith didn’t have to feel one-hundred-percent comfortable all the time to still know he worked on the right side of the law.Love in One Night 7

“Theft is theft. I give them back things they’ve lost.” He moved along the edge of the room. Melanie must be organized. Everything had a label, down to the box holding sponges. “And I’d bet when you get a headache, you take a Tylenol.”

“I’d try magnesium and zinc, but your point is taken. I shouldn’t be generalizing. I don’t like when it’s done to me.”

Griffith had to get out of there before he did anything really asinine, like give the blushing woman a hug. He pulled out his card. “If you hear from Victor or you think of anything, give me a call. I’ll be staying in Austin overnight.”

“Right.” She took his card. “I’m sorry you had to come all the way down here for nothing.”

“I’m not.” Her eyes widened, and he had a moment of sheer male satisfaction. He’d been able to shock her.

“You haven’t asked me why I do this. Why I’m so prepared for a disaster? You haven’t asked. Everyone does.”

“I’ve been a lot of places. I think preparing for things, even if they might never occur, makes pretty good sense. I guess we all have our own reasons for why we do what we do.”

She bit down on her lower lip, chewing on it as she regarded him with narrowed eyes. “So you want to know why I married Victor but not why I formed a whole community dedicated to organic farming in the desert, self-sustaining living, and disaster preparedness?”

“Melanie, if you want to tell me, I’d be really amenable to hearing.” Anything she wanted to say would be fine by him. She could read the phone book aloud, and he’d sit like a good little boy and listen to her.

“Maybe I could. Over dinner tonight.”

His heart skipped a beat. Had she actually asked him out? His mouth opened and closed. When he’d gotten off the plane in Austin, he’d had no idea he’d be stepping onto a sustainable farm, a converted bomb shelter, and asked to dinner by a hot redhead.

  1. For me, I’m terrified of tornadoes. When I was a kid, we experienced some that caused a lot of damage while in Toledo, OH for a family reunion. Then, as an adult, I drove home with one only half an hour behind me. It didn’t hit our house, but took down some branches and hit some of the nearby farms. Now, I always watch the skies when there’s a storm.

Best of luck with your upcoming release!

  2. Since I’m hosting today, I’m going to go ahead and let everyone know that there is only one kind of disaster that scares me. I’ve lived through tornadoes and hurricanes and they were scary as heehaw, but the most terrifying disaster for me is a flood. The town I live in was flipped upside down and torn apart with a big flood in 2001 while I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, but I was so high up on a mountain that I thankfully missed it. Unfortunately, many friends and relatives in town did NOT miss it and just judging by all the pictures I saw, I hope it never happens again! GEESH! It was amazing seeing how water can do such damage.

  3. The disasters that scare me would be all of them lol. Like Rhiannon the flood in 2001 was a close one. I was camping on the New River with my Dad, Mom, Uncle, and Brother at the time it happened. We all was piled up in Dad’s truck for 12 hours just trying to make it home. When we got home everything was a mess, the town was still flooded in areas and even though I live on a hill outside of the flood zone our house still got about a foot of water in it from water running off into our yard. We had dogs at home but a couple of days after the flood my husky died because of the flood waters. Now everytime the water rises it kinda freaks me out.

    1. Prep never hurts, does it? No matter where you move in the world, there is a certain measure of probability for a natural disaster of some sort lol. You can’t run away from them! I sure wish you could, though.

  4. we grew up watching tornados on the roof because we were on the top of the hill and tornados generally take a diff path.

i am scared of hail and I know that may sound silly but when you’re on the highway 30 minutes from any town and surrounded by flat farm land with no ditches and softballsize hail striking forcan hour you’d be scared to. i had to go on anxiety meds for a few months and six years later I still feel that gripping terror if im out caught in a storm

  5. I’ve been through hundreds of tornados and a few earthquakes and one hurricane but what really terrifies me is hailstorms.
Five years ago I was in one that was life threatening to anyone trapped on the highway 30 minutes in any direction from shelter. We were in my conversion van that was totaled afterward. The first golfball size spidered my windshield the second was softball size. The hail broke every window on the driver side the accordian like blinds kept it from coming inside though. Our van rocked for 40 minutes as it struck along with blinding sleeting rain and I will never forget the thunk sound hitting the roof of the van. Cars in front of us made of fiberglass broke in large chunks while we were safe inside other vehicles that were not made in the 80’s had gaping holes in back windshields, front and all windows. It was insane and I still have panic attacks if I’m caught out driving in the rain.

What I remember most is it was beautiful out and then dead calm. The sky was clear and all of the sudden it turned dark as shit and we were in the eye of it with a warning coming over the radio that we had five minutes to find shelter. Didn’t work well we were surrounded by fields of alfalfa and corn. We did find a side rode and a farm when it let up a bit and we got to safety.
